Crysobel by Giatri Chandra Raj
Giatri’s passion for jewelry and design extends back into her Sri Lankan childhood, when at the age of ten she was introduced to her country’s stunning gems and intricate craftsmanship. She created her first sapphire ring, but this passion would submerge and remain dormant while Giatri pursued an academic career in engineering and marketing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Upon searching for nuptial jewelry in 2004 that would combine her traditional eastern roots with her contemporary urban lifestyle, Giatri could find nothing that expressed these two influences. Her passion for jewelry design was reawakened, and through the design of her wedding jewelry, Giatri founded what came to be Crysobel.
Each handcrafted piece is an expression of Giatri’s personal experiences and a reflection of her diverse background rooted in Africa and Asia. The name Crysobel, derived from Chrysoberyl – a gemstone regarded to promote harmony and tolerance, aptly ties together the collection born of her current urban lifestyle with her war-torn homelands of Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Native to these lands are the precious gemstones Giatri uses in her creations, orange, white, pink, and blue sapphires intricately placed in breathtaking settings. These designs fuse together the artistry of old-world eastern elegance and fashion-forward, contemporary urban aesthetics, ideally reflecting and blending the “east meets west” trend.
